Shoemaker 30185 & Cooper 3148, respectively. The first title is Rink 1333, calling for 5 plates. This copy belonged to one Francis Rotch from Butternut, Otsego Co., N.Y., who has made a number of interesting comments in manuscript. Most notably, he has added the purchasers and price paid for the 35 cows and 11 bulls offered for sale by Powel.

Rotch was apparently a dairy farmer and has added notes pertaining to his own stock when it pertains to the text. For example, in connection with a cow described as the most valuable ever exhibited in Massachusetts, Rotch has added,"her calf I purchased, by Benton, and named her (?) Rose." The main title comprises mostly letters to and from Powel, secretary of the Pennsylvania Agricultural Society, plus extracts from various agricultural works, but includes also ((pp. [149-78]) "Pedigrees of Mr. Powel's Improved Durham Shorthorn Cattle," many of which were later auctioned in 1830. Between 1822-31 Powel imported 24 cows and seven bulls to his farm in Pennsylvania. He did much to establish the reputation of Durham Shorthorns in America. See Allen, History of Short Horn Cattle.
