ANDERSON, WILLIAM. System of Surgical Anatomy. Part First [all published]. On the Structure of the Groin, Pelvis, and Perineum, as Connected with Inguinal and Femoral Hernia, Tyeing the Iliac Arteries; and the Operation of Lithotomy. Illustrated by Nine Copper-plate Engravings. New-York: James V. Seaman, 1822. 1st ed. 4to. 199, [1], 12 pp. 9 plates engraved by A.B. Durand. Cont. drab boards, worn, printed paper label (chipped). Plates lightly foxed, text rather heavily foxed. Lacks half title. Part of front blank torn away. A sound copy, uncut. $950.00 A rare and little-known surgical anatomy dedicated to the author's colleague Valentine Mott. Anderson came to the U.S. from Edinburgh in 1820 and this work is based upon, and intended to accompany, his lectures on surgical anatomy in New York. The excellent plates by Durand, four of which are after his own drawings, are not only early examples of his own work-he did not achieve wide public notice until the issuance of his large engraving of Trumbull's "Signing of the Declaration of Independence" in 1823-but an early example of American medical book illustration, not to mention by an artist of Durand's distinction. This work does not appear in any of the standard medical bibliographies. Shoemaker 7813. Cordasco 20-0016. |
