TOLSTOY, L[EO] N[ILOLEYEVICH]. Voina i Mir. Moscow, 1868-69. 1st ed. 6 vols. in 3. 8vo. [2], 297, [1], 146; [4], 186; [1], 284; [4], 336; [4. Cont. uniform 1/2 morocco, marbled boards, cloth corners. Rubbed, some wear to extremities; titles in Cyrillic, stamped in gilt on spines. Evidently lacking 1/2 title to Vol. I, but with the ORIGINAL FRONT PRINTED WRAPS to Vols. II, IV and VI (the last has "2nd ed." printed above imprint). Scattered foxing and occasional light soiling throughout and some other minor textual defects, as follows: repairs to inner margin of title and to several other leaves in Vol. I; two leaves in Vol. V torn and clumsily repaired; some light dampstains to top margin of a few leaves in Vol. IV and to top corner of a number of leaves in Vol. V, in each case slightly affecting text; some ink stains to edge of a few leaves in Vol. V. Overall, a sound, sturdy and tall set, the leaves (23.6 cm. x 15.4 cm.) over a centimeter taller than in the Kilgour copy. Very rare with any of the original wraps. $40,000.00
Kilgour 1195. Vol. I was first published in 1866 under the title The Year Eighteen Hundred and Five (Kilgour 1194), but volume I here is properly part of the first complete edition. On the Grolier list of Great Books of the Western World. Rarely offered for sale.
