Not in Sabin. "Probably the best known of the 19th century American 'primitive' painters, Edward Hicks...spent most of his life in Newtown, Bucks County [Pa.]. He was a coach, sign, and ornamental painter by trade, but gave much of his time to painting historical and religious scenes, the best known being "The Peaceable Kingdom," of which he is thought to have painted over 100 examples. Hicks was also a prominent Quaker preacher and played an active part in the Separation led by his distant cousin Elias Hicks"-Dictionary of Artists in America. |
