Benjamin Gilson (1803-1879), was a boot and shoe maker who lived in Danville, Vermont. He also mended boots and shoes. He later moved to St. Johnsbury where he opened a shoe store on the corner of Main and East Avenue. In about 1858, he moved to McIndoes village in the town of Barnet, and built a house. With Samuel Gleason, Gilson was prominent in building the Methodist Church at McIndoes village. Page 263 shows some accounts with the Methodist Society and page 261 the Chapel Building Committee. Benjamin Gilson was the son of Samuel Gilson (ca.1769-) and Sally (Reynolds) Gilson. She was born ca. 1769 in Bristol, Rhode Island.?Į The book shows many customers who came from Danville, St. Johnsbury, Bedford, Dalton, Waldon, Lyndon, surrounding towns, and even (his brother?) Samuel Gilson, Jr. who is listed as being in "Lower Canada". On page 247 are some school district accounts. Some major customers were John Kelsey, Esq., William Sias, Capt. Salma Davis, Joseph Sweetzer, Rev. A. Webster, and Randall Wheeler. |
