Of Johnstown, (New York) two thousand pounds; with terrible Denunciations in case ofrefusal. To which is added His Recantation: or Four Letters, Written by the Prophet, after his detection. Second Vermont Edition. Juyy [!], 1816. [Rutland?: Fay & Davison?, 1816]. 2nd ed. 12mo. 12 pp. Sewn & uncut, as issued. Browning & some slight stains, but very good unopened copy. $550.00

     

    McCorison 1891. Mallary, p. 109. Sabin 105630. S & S 39883. The earliest located printing is 1802; this is the second known edition. The motive for the alleged extortion and the identity of the perpetrator remain a maystery, as does the Vermont interest in the case. A concluding letter from Morhouse to a New York judge effected the release of the "prophet" from jail.
