S & S 38947. See DAB for an account of Smith, editor of the first religious newspaper published in the U.S., founding member of the Christian Connection. His many writings were critical of other churches whose theological systems had no foundation in the Bible, and his strong anti-Federalist political views often caused controversy. The last leaf is important in this copy as it contains a proposal for printing the second volume of this Life, due out one year from March 1, 1816, should a sufficient number of subscribers be obtained. Later in life Smith befriended Dr. Samuel Thomson and went on t establish a lucrative Thomsonian practice. |
