Lovejoy was Illinois' most active abolitionist until he undertook political support of Abraham Lincoln for Congress and later for President. He was chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture, and offered this poem annually for several years before the agricultural society in Bureau County. NUC records four copies, none in Illinois, plus a 1910 Springfield reprint.
