[SOUTHWOOD, MARION]. Tit for Tat. A Novel. By a Lady of New Orleans. New York: Garret & Company, [1856]. 1st ed. 8vo. 3, [5], 356 [4] pp. Orig. cloth (slightly shaken). Spine faded. A very good copy. $125.00
Wright II, 2288. LCP/HSP Afro-Americana Catalogue, 9661. The preface is dated August 1856 at White Sulphur Springs. The author says the English philanthropists were in 1854 agog over Mrs. Stowe's Tom, but totally unconcerned over their own blacks, i.e. chimney sweeps. NUC declares the author to be the pro-slavery writer, Matthew Estes. The spine indicates the work is a reply to Dred. |
