Annexation by Boston
(BOSTON). Old Roxbury.Wednesday, December 28, 1853. [Caption title]. [Boston: 1853]. 4to. 4 pp. One sheet folded, as issued. $100.00
Printed in the format of a newspaper, but probably the only issue, and not in the Union lists. Discusses the impending vote by Roxbury residents on the issue of annexation by Boston. Reasons for objecting included the fact that Boston had yet to vote on the subject, and the Cochituate water supply was probably not going to be made available in Roxbury, but pipes would be laid through the city. Boston had greater debt than Roxbury. Roxbury was in Norfolk County and would "move" to Suffolk County. Roxbury had fewer residents (5000), but more land than Boston, there were no advantages to be gained, etc. This campaign of opposition was successful. Roxbury was not annexed-- until1867. |
