(KANSAS.). HALE, EDWARD E. Kanzas and Nebraska: The History, Geographical and Physical Characteristics, and Political Position of Those Territories; an Account of the Emigrant Aid Companies, and Directions to Emigrants. Boston: Phillips, Sampson and Company, 1854. 1st ed. 12mo. 256 pp. Folding map. Orig. cloth, top & bottom of spine chipped. Lib. stamp on title. $325.00 Hale's first really influential work, and now quite scarce. Emigration was encouraged in the East in an effort to make Kansas a free state. Southern counter-measures taken in support of slavery in the territory were not as effective as was the work of the aid companies which chiefly resulted from the call to emigration made by this book. The Preface is dated August 21, 1854, at Worcester, Mass. This copy belonged to A[lexis]? Caswell, dated October 6, 1854. Caswell was a scientist and for three years was president of Brown University in Providence, R.I. See DAB. As this copy once belonged to Brown University it seems likely this was President Caswell's copy. |
