On the Death of Rachel Jackson

(JACKSON). [ANON.] (Signed "B"). Lines Written for the United States Telegraph, on the Death of Mrs. Jackson. [Caption title]. Verse broadside on silk, with typographical border, 27 x 15 cm. [Washington, D.C.]: Printed at the Office of the United States Telegraph, [1829]. Three horizonal lines cross the broadside, adversely affecting three words, otherwise very nice. $2,000.00

Mourns the untimely death of Rachel Jackson, following on the heels of Andrew Jackson's election as President of the United States. Jackson married Rachel in 1790, but discovered she was not legally divorced at that time, and remarried her legally in 1794.

However, this "scandal" was fodder in the 1828 Presidential campaign ("wretched malice thrown in vain"), and the stress hastened Rachel's death.

Not recorded, although Brown University possesses the same text in a slightly different format: evidently not on silk, and measuring 28 x 22 cm.

A loving memento of a nasty campaign.
