(FISK). [STAFFORD, MARSHALL]. The Life of James Fisk, Jr., Being a Full and Accurate Narrative of All the Enterprises in Which He Has Been Engaged. New York: Polhemus & Pearson, Printers, 1872. 12mo. 325 pp. Four plates. Sewn, lacks wraps. Title water stained. $100.00
Howes S865, calling for six plates in the 1872 edition, plus an additional 16 pages which could be missing from this copy. However, NUC, which records one copy of an 1871 edition with out title and publisher, calls for the author's name on the one copy of an 1872 edition, a longer title referring to Fisk's assassination, and notice on the title that the book is printed for the author, none of which are true for our copy. Nonetheless, our copy does bring Fisk's colorful life to its abrupt close in 1872, with an account of his funeral. We are probably lacking a frontispiece, possibly another illustration, possibly 16 pages of text (ads?). Our copy is accompanied by a c-d-v of Fisk in his "swagger admiral" uniform. |
