OWEN, ROBERT DALE. Hints on Public Architecture, Containing, Among Other Illustrations, Views and Plans of the Smithsonian Institution: Together with an Appendix Relative to Building Materials. New-York: George P. Putnam, 1849. 1st ed. Large 4to. 17, 119 pp. List of illustrations misbound. With 15 full-page tinted plates and 99 text illustrations. Orig. cloth, slight wear. A very nice copy, unfoxed. $1,250.00 Hitchcock 885. "In 1845 he introduced the bill under which the Smithsonian Institution was constituted, and as a member of the organization committee of the regents he insisted that the work of the Institution should include popular dissemination of scientific knowledge as well as investigation...and he tried to make his expertise available to others by publishing Hints..." In fact, the book grew out of the controversies facing the Building Committee of the Smithsonian, and shows the building in nearly completed designs. A work now very scarce in the market. |
