[3]-23 pp. Plain wraps, the front wrap glued to a stub of what was a title page, the back wrap glued to the verso of the last leaf of text, a typed slip pasted to the verso of the front blank wrap: "Reprinted from the First Annual Report of the Oneida Community." Some stains & wear. $275.00

The First Annual Report was published in 1849; it contained the "Bible Argument" which led to Benjamin Cooley's pamphlet, A Summary Exposition...Worcester 1850. The text of Cooley's work and this pamphlet is identical; in fact, they are one and the same work. While a cursory examination might suggest that Cooley had simply "borrowed" the Oneida text, adding his own title page, the opposite is actually true-the Oneida Community has obtained copies of Cooley's pamphlet, deleted the title page and then pasted the plain back wrap over the verso of page 23 on which Cooley added a note as to the "perverted Sensuality" of Perfectionist theory. Also, the plain wrappers used by Oneida are scrap printings from the title page of John H. Noyes' Salvation from Sin, published in Wallingford in 1866. Oneida was satisfied with Cooley's text; where he saw sin they saw perfection of the social arrangement. Absent from Richmond's Shaker bibliography, but there is considerable comparison of sexual practices, and both pamphlets should be listed by Richmond.
