CAWEIN, MADISON. The White Snake and Other Poems. Translated from the German into the Original Meters. Louisville, [Ky.]: John P. Morton & Co., 1895.  1st ed. 8vo. [10], 79 pp. Frontis., signed by Cawein. Orig. cloth, fine. Univ. of Va. duplicate, with stamps on verso of title and two small bookplates, one of the "Poe Alcove," on front pastedown. $250.00

BAL 2997, state A. One of 150 copies (of which 100 were for sale), with an inscription from the author and publisher, apparently to Prof. James A. Harrison, through whom the book was acquired by Virginia. Harrison, philologist and a pioneer in Old-English scholarship in the United States, was professor of romance languages at Virginia after 1895. He is best known for his work as editor of the collected works of Poe issued by Virginia (17 vols, 1902); see DAB. A very scarce book, with an interesting association.
