    Evidently Unknown Chicago Dickens Imprint

     

    (DICKENS). [TAVERNER, H.T.]. Charles Dickens. The Story of His Life. By the author of the "Life of Thackeray." With Illustrations and Facsimiles. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1870. 1st American edition. 8vo. 110 pp. Original printed and pictorial wraps (repeating title vignette). double column, including frontis. portrait with facsimile on recto, title vignette, text illustrations. With 2 pages of publisher's ads at end dated Sept., 1870. Corners of front wrap chipped away, a few small edge chips. Internally very good. Scarce with the wrappers. $650.00

     

        Wrapper imprint: Chicago: The Western News Company, 121 and 123 State Street. 1870]. Not among the Western News imprints in Antefire Imprints.. Podeschi H 443, not noticing the Chicago imprint on the wrapper. Evidently very rare in this format.

         Purporting to be by Theodore Taylor, a pseudonym of John Camden Hotten, this work was actually written by H.T. Taverner, who is mentioned toward the end of the "Preliminary" on p. [7]. Cf. BLC v. 321, p. 260; Podeschi, J.B. Dickens & Dickensiana, p. 394. Also attributed to Joseph Grego and to William Moy Thomas?��Note to Brigham Young copy.
