Ownership Inscriptions of RI Political Activist, Governor in the Mid-1830s

 

MARSHALL, JOHN. The Life of George Washington...Compiled Under the Inspection of the Honourable Bushrod Washington...to which is Prefixed an Introduction. Philadelphia: C.P. Wayne, 1804-07. 1st ed.  5 vols. 8vo. Bookplate of Samuel A.B. Abbott in each volume. Somewhat later 3/4 calf & marbled boards. All edges stained red. Spines of volumes 1 & 3 have some damage, without loss.   Offsetting of frontis. on title in vol. I. Foxing & old repairs in text of about 4 leaves in vol. 2. $1,850.00

 

     Howes M 317. S & S 6710. Ownership inscriptions in each volume. In vol. 2 is the signature of Abby Francis, an original subscriber. Volume 3 has the inkinscription: "John Brown Francis. Originally subscribed for by my dear Mother Abby Francis." All volumes have similar ink notes by John Brown Francis (1791-1864), Governor of Rhode Island in the 1830s.
