Early Bufford Colored Lithograph of an Indian Painted by J.O. Lewis

(INDIAN LITHOGRAPH). LEWIS, J.O. A Chippeway Squaw and Child. Painted at the treal[!]y du Lac 1826 by J.O. Lewis. [Caption title]. 10" x 7-7/8". Lightly foxed. Colors vivid. New York: Bufford Lith., 136 Nassau St., [1838-40]. Although good margins, probably slightly trimmed. $3,500.00

A fine image of woman and child walking across a modest outdoor background. According to Peters, Bufford began publishing in New York in 1835.

Reese 23, for The Aboriginal Portfolio, "...the first attempt made in the United States at a large scale work devoted to the American Indian. It was lithographed by Lehman and Duval. Publication began in 1835..." but was barely completed due to loss of subscribers, and rarely appears complete in 80 plates (generally 72, sometimes 77). Reese reports that "the last two parts are famously rare..."

At this juncture we only know that this plate, lithographed slightly later than 1835-36, by Bufford, is not in the list of 72 plates created by Lehman and Duval. Sabin 40812.
