    On the one hand, said to be about the Spirit Lake Massacre in Iowa, in 1857. On the other hand, said to be about the Dakota conflict of 1862, in Minnesota. Harmon lived most of his life in Maine, and post-Civil War publication is Maine is likely, according to the cataloging of the two or three versions known. According to the verse, Harmon heard the story from William Wood, a participant who lost his arm. Framed.
