The "Big Bible" Held Aloft by Ellen White

(ADVENTISM). (BIBLE). (WHITE, ELLEN). The Columbian Family and Pulpit Bible...First American Edition, Embellished with Engravings. Boston: Printed by J.H.A. Frost, Published by Joseph Teal, 1822. Tall & thick folio. [1122] pp. Frontis., engraved title and 36 engravings. Full contemp. calf, five raised bands. The family register is folded to fit this format, and is complete, although repaired on verso. Two leaves of text have jagged tears (badly repaired). One illustration lacks a piece of margin. Binding dried and rubbed; front cover detached, but present. Text lightly foxed, but overall quite good, and at more than 18 pounds a miraculous survival. $1,350.00

Hills, The English Bible in America, 434. Shoemaker 8011. The one-volume edition, the New Testament, including the Apocrypha, with no title leaf for the New Testament called for. The frontispiece for the New Testament includes the printed notation cited by Hills for vol. I.

Ellen White, as a frail 17-year old in 1845, is said to have addressed family prayers in a vision lasting for more than 30 minutes, holding aloft a copy of this edition, (also containing the Apocrypha), which weighed over 18 pounds (our copy weighs over 18 pounds). Emulation of the experience is attempted by thousands who have attended camp meetings or visited the Ellen G. White Estate vault in Washington, D.C., and remains today a high point for many of the faithful. Carriage extra!
