    Sabin 2385. See DAB for this incredible story of philanthropy. Augustus, not a wealthy man, became a "self-appointed pioneer probation officer" and bail bondsman, who between 1842 and 1858 spent $243, 235.00 to bail out 1946 persons (of whom 794 were women or girls). An extended biography waspublished as well as this privately printed pamphlet.
