    Apparently Unrecorded William Thornton Ephemeron

(THORNTON). EARLY, ROBERT. Rattler. [Caption title]. Small folio broadside. [Washington, D.C.]: Washington Gazette Office, January 21, 1822. Untrimmed on three sides; trimmed at the top. $2,000.00

A marvelous, apparently unrecorded textual broadside concerning the race horse Rattler, '[b]elonging to Dr. Wiliam Thornton of the city of Washington..." who was to stand at farms in Virginia. Great detail is given of Rattler's successful racing career, and its end with injury, which was reported in the National Intelligencer on October 17.

See DAB for an account of Thornton, the capitol architect. Of him, William Dunlap wrote: "He was a scholar and a gentleman--full of talent and eccentricity--a Quaker by profession, a painter, a poet, and a horse-racer--well acquainted with the mechanic arts....He was a 'man of infinite humour'--humane and generous, yet fond of field sports--his company was a complete antidote to dullness."
