MANN, HORACE. An Oration, Delivered at Dedham [Mass.], July 4th, 1823. Dedham, [Mass.]: Printed by H. & W. H. Mann, [1823]. 1st ed. 8vo. 25 pp. Sewn & uncut, as issued. Ink notations on title. Some fraying & soiling. Very scarce. $325.00

Shoemaker 13210, locating two copies. Apparently Mann's first publication: there are no works by him listed in the author index to Shaw & Shoemaker, nor any in Shoemaker for the years 1820-22. Admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1823, Mann practiced law successfully in Dedham for 10 years. He became a member of the state legislature in 1827, serving continuously until 1837 when he became Secretary of the newly formed Mass. Board of Education. It was in this capacity that he issued the series of annual reports upon which his fame so justly rests.
