[BRIGGS, CHARLES F. & G.P. PUTNAM]. Homes of American Authors; Comprising Anecdotical, Personal, and Descriptive Sketches, by Various Writers. New-York: D. Appleton & Company, 1857. 8vo. 8, [1], 374 pp. Contemp. gilt stamped red three-quarter morocco, very slight scuffing. Occasional offsetting. Collector's bookplate. $350.00

Sabin 32741 does not list this edition. BAL 1345 for the first edition of 1853, noting the addition of Halleck in the 1854 edition, and here noting editorship by Briggs and Putnam, according to Foley. Bennett, U.S. Color Plate Books: "In this instance, the full page plates are all black and white, but a series of 14 very charming colored vignettes, printed on tissues and mounted onto the book sheets, mainly as chapter headings, is too remarkable not to be registered. These vignettes are all glimpses of portions of the residences or grounds." We have counted eleven wood engravings colored, but not on mounted tissue in this edition not published by Putnam.

The subjects are Audubon, Paulding, Irving, Bryant, Bancroft, Dana, Prescott, Sedgwick (the only woman), Cooper, Everett, Emerson, Simms, Longfellow, Hawthorne, Webster, Kennedy, Lowell and Halleck.

BAL 4264 (Curtis), et al. Other authors are Tuckerman, Greene, Hillard, Bryant, Peck, Griswold, Godwin, Kirkland and Hale. BAL 20665, under Tuckerman, provides more information on issue points of the 1853 edition. Not in Reese.
