(KANSAS.). HALE, EDWARD E. Kanzas and Nebraska: The History, Geographical and Physical Characteristics, and Political Position of Those Territories; an Account of the Emigrant Aid Companies, and Directions to Emigrants. Boston: Phillips, Sampson and Company, 1854. 1st ed. 12mo. 256 pp. Folding map, with small tear. Orig. cloth, soiled. Slight early staining. $275.00

Hale's first really influential work, and now quite scarce. Emigration was encouraged in the East in an effort to make Kansas a free state. Southern counter-measures taken in support of slavery in the territory were not as effective as was the work of the aid companies which chiefly resulted from the call to emigration made by this book.
