    Scientific Rapping

(SPIRITUALISM). SWAIM, JAMES. The Mural Diagraph, or the Art of Conversing Through a Wall. Philadelphia: Clark & Raser, 1829. 1st ed. 18mo. 24 pp. Contemp. calf backed stiff marbled wrappers. $750.00

Shoemaker 40580 (one copy); NUC records a second. This work, using a numerological code, with examples, using the numbers of raps as equivalents for letters, provides a scientific basis for successful communication by rapping. The only edition of a work which antedates the miraculous "Rochester rappings," of which it is perhaps the progenitor by nearly 20 years. (It may be interesting to students of the religious and spiritual activities in the "burnt-over" district of New York state that this work would appear in 1829.)

Swaim in 1830 co-authored  a book on the French Revolution of 1830 with C.C. Conwell, to whom this "Scheme" is dedicated.
