PECK, WILLIAM DANDRIDGE. Natural History of the Slug Worm. Boston: Young & Minns, 1799. 1st ed. 8vo. 14 pp. Engraved frontis. Modern calf backed boards. Very nice. $525.00

Evans 36052. Peck was one of the most important American scientists of that period. Friends raised a subscription to have Peck elected professor in natural history at Harvard in 1805. He was sent to Europe shortly thereafter to observe scientific institutions there firsthand. "During this trip he purchased many books for the library of the new department....He was a man of great ability in a number of directions: he constructed his first microscope; he was an artist and made exquisite drawings; he was a classical scholar. In 1812 he was one of the incorporators of the American Antiquarian Society. "Peck was probably the first teacher of entomology in the United States and probably the first writer of scientific attainment to enter the field of economic entomology." - DAB.

Possibly the engraving is by Peck himself.
