With 9 Michigan Territory Binder's Bookplates

Philadelphia: Joseph and Edward Parker, 1832. Large & thick 4to. Contemp. calf, rubbed & dried, many covers detached. Some leather labels. A clean set, but incomplete, lacking volumes 8 & 16. $850.00

Rink 123, the apparent noted variant, although not 18 volumes in 36 as called for by Rink. B & B 12259, also calling for 18 volumes in 36, not noticing the fine plate volume of 267 full page engraved plates of the arts, sciences and mathematics. Text in some volumes begins "American Edition," other volumes, "Second American Edition."

Offered chiefly for the contemporary small green paper bookplates in nine (of the first ten) volumes, of S.L. Rood, bookbinder of Detroit. Cf. AAS, A Society's Chief Joys, pp. 126-27 for an exhibit of 1800 specimens: "The labels shown here are of the eighteenth century with the exception of the Detroit, Michigan Territory, example [Stowell & Rood]."
