"Since I have come here I have succeeded in study entirely beyond my expectations, and I feel all the time as keen as a colt, only when [sic] I get a little refractory and John puts forth his hand and takes the rod....I am boarding at Uncle Rogers'....We have about 10 scholars through the day, and 16 to 18 in the evening at writing schools....I think this is the best opportunity I have ever had for learning, but it cannot last long, time will not wait for us, the first of March is but a few hours ahead and then I shall probably try my good old healthy exercise, Work...."

Jason Brown was born in 1823, at Hudson. Jason, along with his brother, John Brown, Jr., was arrested in 1856 in Kansas on the charge of treason and afterward returned to Ohio. He had not known of his father's purposes in Kansas, and was horrified by the murders. He did not go to Harpers Ferry with his father.
