Surviving Son of Harpers Ferry

(BROWN, JOHN). (BROWN, OWEN). "Portage County to Owen Brown." Holograph 1 p. small 4to. document, in ink, possibly in the hand of Owen Brown, also signed by three judges attesting to the account. Accounts dated Sept. 27, Oct. 6 and Nov. 5, ca. 1850?. [Hudson], Portage Co., Ohio: ca. 1850?. Docketed. $225.00

Account of purchases and services rendered by Owen Brown, totalling $14.57, attested to by Brown, the third son of John Brown, and three judges. Includes a listing "for putting a Lock on the fire proof office," plus two monthly accounts for various stores (beef, pork, bread, butter, cheese and whiskey), all individually priced. Owen was his father's chief lieutenant later, in Kansas and at Harpers Ferry. When his father's band attacked Harpers Ferry, Owen remained at the Kennedy Farm, and led the five survivors of the raid to safety.
