(RAILROAD LABOR STRIFE). National American--Extra. New York and Erie Railroad. Another Statement of the Engineers. [Caption title]. Folio broadside, printed in three columns. [New York or Jersey: 1856]. Some soiling on edges, but very good. $450.00

The engineers of the line accuse the company of hiring incompetent engineers who endanger the lives of passengers and have already caused accidents. "Safety first and speed afterward" is not applied to running the road, incompetent switchmen have caused accidents and engineers "have been discharged without a hearing, thereby violating the pledge of Mr. McCallum to us." Indicates the company will not provide an extra person during snow storms who is needed to see the other side of the rails. Now the company is offering $25. bonus for performing duty, and engineers from other lines are welcome. By 1863 the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers was formed. The pattern of firings and bonuses for replacements is common in these disputes.

We do not locate the National American in the ULS or under New York City, Paterson or Jersey City in the ULN.
