    Johnson was the most important early American philosopher. "Being greatly desirous to promote the Study of Hebrew in America, I have drawn up this short English and Hebrew Grammar..." --Preface. President of King's College in New York, Johnson was the author of Ethices Elementa (1746). "He ranks with Jonathan Edwards as one of thr two most important exponents of idealistic philosophy in colonial America." --DAB.

    The present work was published in London in 1767 and also 1776, but never appeared in an American edition. Rare.
