    Unknown First Complete Edition

(PENMANSHIP). GOULD, NATHANIEL D. Penmanship or the Beauties of Writing Exemplified in a Variety of Specimens. Practical and Ornamental. Second Edition. Boston: Annin & Smith, Dec. 1, 1822. Oblong 4to. 6 pp. of text; 21 plates, including engraved title. Contemp. calf backed stiff marbled wrappers, partially torn at hinge. $750.00

Nash 153, for the first edition of 1822, with six pages of text and six plates. This edition is not in Nash, the Imprints Survey or NUC.  Nash 154 and 155 list undated editions, presumably prior to the dated edition of 1829, both containing the full complement of engraved plates, as here. The text is bound before the title in this copy, and contains the ink signature of an owner from 1824. Laid in is a full page specimen of penmanship by him, dated March 9, 1824. Also both Nash and DAB for Gould, best known, according to the latter, for his work as a conductor and teacher of music. However Nash's appraisal for Gould's work in the field of penmanship is much higher: Gould "in his care for writing as an art ranks first among the teachers and authors in the field of penmanship during the half century."
