Rink 822. Shoemaker 37424. "By 1820 he was already a prominent man, deeply interested in the textile industry. After a tour through England and France to inspect their new inventions he wrote a book about these new achievements, which appeared in 1829 with a 'doubleacting steam engine' as its frontispiece....Allen's book was eminently practical, and contained information the American public was very much in need of, notably on steam and hydraulics.: --Struik. Karpinski, pp. 298-99. The copyright slip has not been noticed by bibliographers cited. Also see DAB, for this notable son of Providence. Once a common book, now difficult to obtain.
