Wonderful Zachary Taylor Campaign Lithograph in the Wintertime Outside Barnum's Museum in New York

(BARNUM). BENECKE, TH. (Composer & Lithographer). [Zachary Taylor Rally in New York]. Large folio colored lithograph, without letters. [New York: Emil Seitz; Printed by Nagel & Lewis, 1855? or1870?]. On heavy board, as published, with very good margins. $2,750.00

Peters, p. 93: "This imaginative and colorful print, showing Barnum's Museum, is the only work from the hands of these men I have seen. It is justly celebrated, and well worthy of reproduction." A splendid color lithograph that shows musicians and spectators on the balcony of Barnum's Museum, in a winter street scene that is pure chaos, three sleighs filled with people madly dashing past, each carrying between two and a dozen riders, pedestrians milling about, with two boys readying snowballs for a little fun. The sleigh on the left carries supporters of "Old Rough and Ready," Zachary Taylor.

Peters, in America on Stone, reproduces this scene twice, once in black and white, once in color. Drawn and produced first in 1855, ours is a superbly colored and produced chromolithograph without letters, on a stock which suggests a somewhat later date. If, in fact, later, Peters appears not to have known of it in 1930, as he specifically mentions the print's worthiness for reproduction.
