The Rare First Canadian Edition, Which Preceded the First American Edition

[CLEMENS, SAMUEL L.]. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. By Mark Twain. Toronto: Belford Bros, 1876. First Canadian edition. 12mo. [4], 341, [2] pp. Includes four pages of ads. Orig. cloth, hinges & spine quite rubbed, covers somewhat soiled. Shaken, mostly toward the front, some edges chipped. $850.00

BAL 3609. Peter Parley to Penrod, pp. 43-4. American Grolier 100, # 79. A pirated edition which followed and was based upon the London edition, and preceded the first American edition. See commentary in BAL and PP to P.  Very rare, NUC recording four copies.

This copy differs in the ads from the copy we have handled in wrappers; four pages to the two in this copy, although a leaf could be missing here. The ad leaf we have here shows Adventures of Tom Sawyer on the recto and Mummies and Moslems on the verso. In the wrappered copy, Adventures of Tom Sawyer is the verso on the second leaf to Old Times on the Mississippi on the recto.
