CHAPMAN, JOHN JAY. Memories and Milestones. New York: Moffat, Yard and Company, 1915. 1st ed. 12mo. 9, 270 pp. Four photographic illustrations. Orig. cloth, minor wear. $75.00

Along with memoirs of William James and Julia Ward Howe, are important essays on"The Negro Question" and the first book appearance of Chapman's famous prayer meeting at Coatesville, Pennsylvania, on the first anniversary of a lynching there, in which prosectution of those responsible had failed. Only an old anti-slavery Negress and a police informer attended to hear Chapman seek absolution for his own part in the crime. One of the great statements of moral responsibility.
