(WOMEN). MARIE, JANE. The Case of Jane Marie, Exhibiting the Cruelty and Barbarous Conduct of James Ross, to a Defenceless Woman. Written and published by the object of his cruelty and vengenance, and Addressed to the Public of Philadelphia and the Whole of Pennsylvania. [Philadelphia]: Sep. 1808. 1st ed. 8vo. 28 pp. Removed. Browned. $175.00

Sabin 44560. S & S 15493. A land dispute, Jane Marie claiming that Ross did not have legal right to her home. Ross declared himself the purchaser of said home from Marie's husband who first left and then divorced Jane. Ross took possession.

Probably published for political effect, issued during Ross' third, and last, unsuccessful run for the governorship of Pennsylvania on the Federalist ticket, but more importantly, discusses the lack of rights of a wife to her husband's property. Jane Marie tries to picture Ross, a former Senator, as a cruel land speculator who regularly evicted mothers and their children.
