Probable A.B. Johnston Contribution

(JOHNSTON, A.B.). McALLISTER, A. A Dissertation on the Medical Properties and Injurious Effects of the Habitual Use of Tobacco: Read, According to Appointment, Before the Medical Society of the County of Oneida, at Their Semi-Annual Meeting, January 5, 1830. Second Edition. Improved and enlarged, with an Introductory Preface, by Moses Stuart. Boston: Peirce & Parker; New York: H.C. Sleight , 1832. 16mo. 36 pp. Removed; foreedge uncut. $225.00

B & B 13474. First published in Utica in 1830. P. 36 contains a testimonial by John C. Warren, written for this edition. On p. [v] is a letter dated at Utica, Feb. 27, 1830, signed in type by seven citizens of Utica, headed by A.B. Johnson, to the Medical Society of the County of Oneida, praising the work, enclosing a letter (here printed) in support, and urging publication. Running to some five paragraphs, this analysis and encomium is undoubtedly from the pen of A.B. Johnson, and constitutes a hitherto unknown contribution by this "philosophical banker." The same can perhaps be said of Dr. John C. Warren's remarks.
