    (PENMANSHIP.). DEAN, HENRY. Dean's Analytical Guide to the Art of Penmanship, Containing a Variety of Plates in which are exhibited a Complete System of Practical Penmanship...also An Historical account of the Origin & Progress of Writing and Printing. Second- Edition, Revised, Improved and Enlarged. New-York: Published for the Author, [1808]. 4to. 269 x 215 mm. 110 pp., with subscriber's list. 36 engraved plates, one folding (small tear), mostly by  Peter Maverick. Contemp. calf, quite worn, hinges cracked but sound. Text clean, plates somewhat foxed. $650.00


    S & S 14835.  Nash, American Penmanship, 8.  The majority of plates were engraved by Maverick.  Although foxed, the plates are most attractive and represent excellent work. Stauffer, American Engravers on Copper and Steel, 2241, for "Genius of Penmanship."  The other plates are not listed.  The first half of the l9th century was especially rich in works designed for self-education and material improvement.  The use of language was recognized as a key and led to a variety of democratic improvements--especially the public school system.
